A voluptuous wine with loads of sweet berry fruit, the finish long and satisfying - Nick Munday

Claymore Wines, situated in the Clare Valley, is home to many varietals planted on their 57ha estate which comprises six vineyards. The owner, Adelaide medical professional Anura Nitchingham, has a passion for great wine, timeless music and the Liverpool Football Club. The wine labels are inspired by songs and albums from Pink Floyd, U2, Prince and more.

"A voluptuous wine with loads of sweet berry fruit, the fruit immaculately well-handled and integrated, the tannins fine and ripe, the finish long and satisfying. Highly recommended and outstanding at the price."  Nick Munday

"Matured for 18 months in both French and American oak barrels. Deep crimson red; aromatic nose of ripe red berries and cherries spicy characters evident; full rich plate of ripe berries and lovely fruit characters and medium to fine grain tannins add to complexity. Good persistence of flavour. A full flavoured Australian style Shiraz made from older vine, minimally irrigated fruit displaying great concentration and depth of flavour."  Winery Notes

Expert reviews

"Another delicious Clare Valley shiraz from the outstanding 2005 Clare vintage (Clare Valley seems to have been the stand-out region from South Australia in 2005). A voluptuous wine with loads of sweet berry fruit, the fruit immaculately well-handled and integrated, the tannins fine and ripe, the finish long and satisfying. Highly recommended and outstanding at the price."  Nick Munday, Canterbury Wines

"The 2005 Shiraz 'Dark Side of the Moon' is deep crimson-coloured with aromas of toasty oak, smoke, tar, blueberry, and blackberry. Ripe and full-flavoured, it has enough structure to evolve for 3-5 years. Drink this lengthy wine through 2015."  Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate - 90 points

About the winery

Claymore Wines

In 1996, Adelaide medical professional Anura Nitchingham purchased a 16ha block at Penwortham in the Clare Valley and planted grenache and riesling vines. The first wines were made in 1997. Since then, many other varietals have been planted (most notably shiraz) and the estate has grown to approximately 57ha, including 5 additional vineyards dotted from Auburn to Watervale, with vine ages ranging from 30–80+ years.

Anura has a passion for timeless music and the wine labels are inspired by songs and albums from Pink Floyd, U2, Prince and more.

"Across the different vineyards, there is an assortment of soil profiles and a delightfully eclectic mix of new and old vines. Some of the Riesling vines are over eighty years old and great pride is taken to preserve the heritage and integrity of the vines to ensure continuous longevity. It's the diversity merged with modern winemaking practices and old-world ideals that create broad flavour profiles in our range of wines that excites the palate."  Claymore Wines

Wine region map of South Australia

South Australia

South Australian is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. It is home to more than 900 wineries across 18 wine regions. The regions are Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Eden Valley, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Fleurieu, Southern Flinders Ranges and Wrattonbully.

Many of the well-known names in the South Australian wine industry established their first vineyards in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The first vines in McLaren Vale were planted at Reynella in 1839 and Penfold's established Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1844.

South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the State to be able to produce a range of grape varieties - from cool climate Riesling in the Clare and Eden Vallies to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Two of Australia's best-known wines, Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, are produced here. There is much to discover in South Australia for the wine lover.
