Henty Estate is a small family owned vineyard located 6 kilometres north of Hamilton in the Henty wine region of Victoria. The wines are made using traditional methods, including open fermenting, basket pressing and maturation in quality French oak. Yields are limited to 3–4 tonnes per hectare.

Henty Estate has received much press of late thanks to James Halliday awarding their 2006 shiraz 96 points. They also make a delicious chardonnay in minute quantities. Lots of tropical fruit on the nose; a focused and spotlessly clean palate showing pure nectarine, grapefruit, melon and lime fruits, fresh acidity and a long finish.

"Light straw colour, melon and lime fruit characters along with seamless and subtle oak integration. The wine exhibits a crisp acidity and lingering flavour. A great match for Asian dishes."  Henty Estate

About the winery

Henty Estate VineyardThe 8 hectare vineyard is located 6 kilometres North of Hamilton in the Henty wine region of Victoria. The wines are grown, made and bottled entirely on the estate. The vineyard is dry grown on older volcanic soils and the wines are made using traditional methods, including open fermenting, basket pressing and maturation in quality French oak. Yields are limited to 3–4 tonnes per hectare.

Henty Estate was established in 1991 by Peter and Gleyns Dixon who were strong in their conviction that great wines are made in the vineyard. They began by planting 4.5ha of shiraz, 1ha each of cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, and 0.5ha of riesling. They established the winery in 2003 and in their words "We avoided the temptation to make wine until the vineyard was mature."

The climate is characterised by cold, wet winters and warm, dry summers followed by a long cool autumn ripening period. Grapes ripen later here than in many other wine regions, resulting in superb intense varietal flavours.

Michael Hilsdon and Matilda McGoon purchased Henty Estate from the Dixon's in 2018. They hold true to the same ideals of no compromise on quality in the vineyard and the winemaking.

Wine region map of Victoria

Victoria

Victoria is home to more than 800 wineries across 21 wine regions. The regions are Alpine Valley, Beechworth, Bendigo, Geelong, Gippsland, Glenrowan, Goulburn Valley, Grampians, Heathcote, Henty, King Valley, Macedon Ranges, Mornington Peninsula, Murray Darling, Pyrenees, Rutherglen, Strathbogie Ranges, Sunbury, Swan Hill, Upper Goulburn and Yarra Valley.

Victoria's first vines were planted at Yering in the Yarra Valley in 1838. By 1868 over 3,000 acres had been planted in Victoria, establishing Victoria as the premier wine State of the day. Today, the original vineyards planted at Best's Wines are among the oldest and rarest pre-phylloxera plantings in the world.

Victoria's climate varies from hot and dry in the north to cool in the south and each wine region specialises in different varietals. For example, Rutherglen in the north is famous for its opulent Muscats and Topaque and bold reds, while the many cooler climate regions near Melbourne produce world class Chardonnay and pinot Noir. Victoria is truly a wine lover's playground.
