Extraordinary. Another simply sublime edition of this great wine - Ray Jordan

Description

"Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the blue blood classics of Australia. Regardless of the vintage conditions, they are a pleasure to drink at almost any stage of their development."  James Halliday

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia's iconic wines and deservedly fits in the Exceptional category of Langton's Classification of Australian Wine. Handcrafted by Keith & Clare Mugford and their team, the wine is the very definition of power and elegance. Moss Wood is located in the Wilyabrup sub-region in the heart of Margaret River and the  Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the estate vineyard first planted in 1969 with the famed Houghton clone.

"Pulsating with sweet fruits and velvety mouthfeel, it only takes a split second for this wine to establish its greatness in the pantheon of cabernet sauvignons grown around the world. The unusual decision to include 7% petit verdot doubtless played its part, but its synergy with the cabernet must have given much pleasure and justified pride. This is a cabernet to melt a pinot noir addict's heart."  James Halliday

"Deep, brick red hue; bright condition. Dark and red berry aromas of blueberry, blackberry and redcurrant, plus some violets, cloves, dark jube and musk, a sure indicator of the presence of Petit Verdot.  The complex background is all about Cabernet Sauvignon, with lots of tar, dark chocolate, tobacco and even some cinnamon and toasty oak. On the palate there is a concentration of all features which make this a classic, low-crop Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, which in many ways, takes us all the way back to 1981.  A full-bodied wine, there are generous blueberry and blackberry flavours, as well as dark, chocolate, coffee and licorice that fill the mid-palate.  They sit over a structure of fresh acidity and concentrated tannin, making the wine bright, long and, for Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon, quite taut.

The 2020 definitely brings back memories of the tannins of the 1981 but also some of the pretty aromas of the 2015.  The key for us, though, is the 2020 is very much in the style of the former and has a long life ahead and we anticipate relatively gradual development.  As always, it has Moss Wood’s typical early balance, with a youthful fruit depth that is enjoyable now. However, do not be fooled.  Beneath the velvet glove is a clenched fist that will keep this wine going for many decades and it may well repeat the performance of its older sibling and take 2 decades to show significant development."  Moss Wood

Western Australia

Western Australia is home to more than 400 wineries across nine vast and extraordinary wine regions which are almost entirely concentrated in the south-west and great southern land divisions of the State. The regions are Blackwood Valley, Geographe, Great Southern, Peel, Pemberton, Manjimup, Margaret River and Swan District.

The oldest region is the Swan Valley, the best known both nationally and internationally is Margaret River and the largest is Great Southern. The Great Southern region is further divided into the five subregions of Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup.

The history of wine production in Western Australia dates back to 1840 with the establishment of Sandalford in the Swan Valley region. The recognition of the fine wine possibilities started to be realised after the establishment of the Margaret River Region in 1967, which has become renowned for its high quality Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The other regions produce a diverse range of regionally distinct wines, from stunning Rieslings and evocative Shiraz, to a range of unique Cabernet Sauvignon blends.
