Description
Mount Mary is one of the iconic wineries of Australia and one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley. Their Chardonnay plays second fiddle to the Quintet and Pinot Noir but is up there with the very best Yarra Valley chardonnays. Fruit is sourced from a low-yielding vineyard, comprising a large proportion of the Mendoza clone, planted on Silurian mudstones with high clay content.
"What a wine! Textbook Yarra Valley Chardonnay here. Nectarine, struck match, almond meal, fennel and white flowers with a grapefruity zing. Flinty, fine-boned, yet flavoursome and powerful, juicy feel, then surges and pulls tight on a super long stony finish, with lime and vanilla in the aftertaste. Just so bloody good." Gary Walsh
Mount Mary aims to make a Chardonnay with great length, which reaches a balance between richness and elegance. While some techniques are borrowed from the Burgundians, there are some departures from traditional practice in response to local factors, which ensure a unique wine. The most notable of these is that the Chardonnay does not undergo malolactic fermentation, as the local climate leaves the fruit with ideal acidity when it is picked. The Chardonnay is matured in 30% new French oak barriques, with the balance in older barrels and large casks (1500L). The entire production is barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture, and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Chardonnay is matured in barrel for 11 months prior to bottling.
"2015 was an ideal season for producing quintessential Mount Mary Chardonnay. Philosophically, we strive to make Chardonnay that sits somewhere between the old and new world styles. Firm fresh acid, backed by healthy amounts of flavour, body and character are evident in this wine, attributed from site and season. The aromas of the 2015 Chardonnay open with a slight whiff of struck match before showing an aroma profile ranging from grapefruit and lime right through to white peach, honey, toast, nuts and an array of spices. The palate shows restraint and poise whilst displaying an incredible underlying power and intensity. It's the purity and length of this wine that sets it apart from other vintages." Mount Mary

Victoria
Victoria is home to more than 800 wineries across 21 wine regions. The regions are Alpine Valley, Beechworth, Bendigo, Geelong, Gippsland, Glenrowan, Goulburn Valley, Grampians, Heathcote, Henty, King Valley, Macedon Ranges, Mornington Peninsula, Murray Darling, Pyrenees, Rutherglen, Strathbogie Ranges, Sunbury, Swan Hill, Upper Goulburn and Yarra Valley.
Victoria's first vines were planted at Yering in the Yarra Valley in 1838. By 1868 over 3,000 acres had been planted in Victoria, establishing Victoria as the premier wine State of the day. Today, the original vineyards planted at Best's Wines are among the oldest and rarest pre-phylloxera plantings in the world.
Victoria's climate varies from hot and dry in the north to cool in the south and each wine region specialises in different varietals. For example, Rutherglen in the north is famous for its opulent Muscats and Topaque and bold reds, while the many cooler climate regions near Melbourne produce world class Chardonnay and pinot Noir. Victoria is truly a wine lover's playground.
