It's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with amazing power, texture and amplitude - Huon Hooke

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is the archetypal warm climate Australian shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Kalimna Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

It is all about the saturated black fruits and black licorice at the steering wheel of this multilayered, full-bodied shiraz, its future still in front of it."  James Halliday

The 2014 Bin 28 Kalimna was sourced from vineyards in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Wrattonbully, Port Lincoln and Clare Valley. The wine was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads.

"Medium-deep crimson. Black cherry, raspberry and chinotto aromas with herb garden and pipe tobacco notes. Well-concentrated with pure black cherry, raspberry, redcurrant and cola flavours, fine loose-knit chalky tannins and underlying leafy sappy notes. Al dente leafy finish. Firmer in style but still has richness and volume. Drink now to 2038.

Vintage Conditions: Above-average winter and early spring rainfall offered the vines in South Australia healthy soil moisture profi les for the growing season. A warm and wet start to the spring season in McLaren Vale brought an early start to the season. A signifi cant hail storm and high wind activity caused poor set during the fl owering period. Late spring and summer were dry and warm with signifi cant heat records being set. Warm weather prevailed during summer and throughout veraison, allowing grapes to develop evenly and with good intensity. These warm conditions came to an abrupt halt mid-February with a signifi cant rainfall event producing a slow and even ripening process and an extended harvest."  Penfolds

Expert reviews

"This is the mother of the Bin range, first made in '59 from shiraz largely ex Penfolds Kalimna Vineyard. Kalimna is now a registered trademark, the wine coming from vineyards spread across SA. It spent 12 months in American oak, but it is all about the saturated black fruits and black licorice at the steering wheel of this multilayered, full-bodied shiraz, its future still in front of it. Drink by 2039."  James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion - 95 points

"Very deep, dense purple/red hue, young for its age. The bouquet is slightly coconut oak driven at this stage, but also has touches of mocha, dark chocolate, and toasty smoky notes from oak maturation. It's full-bodied, dense and concentrated, with amazing power, texture and amplitude. A big Bin 28, with masses of aplomb. Drink: 2017-2036."  Huon Hooke, The Real Review - 95 points

Wine region map of South Australia

South Australia

South Australian is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. It is home to more than 900 wineries across 18 wine regions. The regions are Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Eden Valley, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Fleurieu, Southern Flinders Ranges and Wrattonbully.

Many of the well-known names in the South Australian wine industry established their first vineyards in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The first vines in McLaren Vale were planted at Reynella in 1839 and Penfold's established Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1844.

South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the State to be able to produce a range of grape varieties - from cool climate Riesling in the Clare and Eden Vallies to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Two of Australia's best-known wines, Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, are produced here. There is much to discover in South Australia for the wine lover.
