This is a huge wine, and fans of the style will be thrilled this season because it is a lot of everything - Erin Larkin

Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is the archetypal warm climate Australian shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Kalimna Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

"Richly flavoured wine with superb dark cherry, blackberry fruits, fine chocolaty tannins, wonderful mid-palate richness and well-balanced mocha notes. Finishes bittersweet with chinotto dark berry fruits.  A beautifully balanced wine showing all the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style."  Andrew Caillard MW

The 2022 Bin 28 Kalimna was sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and  Wrattonbully. The wine was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads.

"Purple with a black core. The aromatic spectrum presents an array of scents that point to varietal origin. The nose is distinguished by a subtle formic character, closely followed by savoury notes of blood pudding, aniseed/fennel and black liquorice. A hint of milk chocolate adds a soft, sweet touch to the predominantly dark fruit profile, where red, blue, and black fruits are all present. Ground cinnamon, toasted fennel seeds, clove, mace and sumac contribute to an overall impression of liveliness. The palate texture is suggestive of cocoa powder while being framed by just enough savoury oak to add structure without dominating. Leading with black fruit characters, it progresses with dark plum and hints of gamey richness (roasted venison). Baking spice notes and a delicate icing sugar dusting add nuance without tipping into overt sweetness. Lively acidity carries through from start to finish, perfectly accompanied by fine structural tannins that contribute to an enduring balance. Despite its depth and layers, it carries itself with typical Bin 28 ease; its complexity is apparent yet approachable. Peak drinking: Now-2045."  Penfolds

"Deep crimson. Intense dark cherry, blackberry aromas with dark chocolate/ espresso notes. Richly flavoured wine with superb dark cherry, blackberry fruits, fine chocolaty tannins, wonderful mid-palate richness and well-balanced mocha notes. Finishes bittersweet with chinotto dark berry fruits.  A beautifully balanced wine showing all the hallmarks of the Penfolds house style. McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully. Drink now – 2040."  Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal Penfolds Collection 2024 - 96 points

"Quelle surprise! Penfolds impresses with a multi-regional blend. It's something they do so well; a combination of vineyard resources and masterful blending with such quality and consistency across their 'Bin' range of wines. Deep set satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry fruits with hints of baking spices, charcuterie, violets, fennel tops, dried herbs, nicely-judged American oak and a gentle earthen hue. There's a lovely, bright fruit presence here; long, flavourful and delicious now with the promise of excellent cellaring potential. Drink 2024-2042."  Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion - 95 points and Special Value Wine

"This famous wine is now a multi-regional blend with fruit from McLaren vale, the Barossa, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. This is one of the best in recent years with beautiful aromas of meaty charcuterie character, merging with a little licorice and lifted aniseed. Dark plummy fruits with traces of licorice, dark chocolate and a further hint of graphite contribute to an engaging palate. So well balanced and poised. Cellar 20 years."  Ray Jordan - 95 points

"The aromas of crushed stones and blackberries are impressive. Dark fruit and dusty tannins are spread out on the medium-bodied palate. It delivers plenty of pretty fruit that goes long and focused. Drink or hold. Screw cap."  James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com - 93 points

"I’m not sure that the fruit really prosecutes the finish as well as it might, but the main bed of flavour presented, and the spread of tannin, and the overall bright-and-juicy presentation of fruit, is pretty impressive. Sweet plum, redcurrant, cedar and vanilla characters get the job done, and handsomely. Maybe if the wine had been allowed to breathe – it was pretty much pop and poured, as all the Penfolds new releases are – it would have extended out, but I looked at this wine a few times and the palate was gorgeous but I couldn’t get the finish to wow me. Drink 2024-2034+."  Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front - 92 points

"The 2022 Bin 28 Shiraz differs from the 128 in that the latter is sourced solely from Coonawarra and matured in French oak. Here, the Bin 28 comes from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully and matured in American oak. I find this wine to be concentrated and fierce, with plentiful tannins that are a little rugged. They frame the succulent, ripe, juicy fruit and present the wine as a complete package. This is a huge wine, and fans of the style will be thrilled this season because it is a lot of everything: beautiful fruit, abundant tannin, obvious oak and enduring length. It has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.68 and 6.6 grams per liter of total acidity. Drink 2024 - 2042."  Erin Larkin, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 92 points

"Deep, dark colour, with black fruits, creosote, bitumen and black pepper on the nose. The wine is full-bodied and dense with richness and extract aplenty, the tannins just a tad rustic, with a touch of chew that lingers but the tannins are ripe and supple as well. (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway & Wrattonbully. 12 months in American oak hogsheads) Drink by 2024–2039."  Huon Hooke, The Real Review - 91 points

Wine region map of South Australia

South Australia

South Australian is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. It is home to more than 900 wineries across 18 wine regions. The regions are Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Eden Valley, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Fleurieu, Southern Flinders Ranges and Wrattonbully.

Many of the well-known names in the South Australian wine industry established their first vineyards in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The first vines in McLaren Vale were planted at Reynella in 1839 and Penfold's established Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1844.

South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the State to be able to produce a range of grape varieties - from cool climate Riesling in the Clare and Eden Vallies to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Two of Australia's best-known wines, Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, are produced here. There is much to discover in South Australia for the wine lover.
