Super luscious, voluptuous black fruits; rippling velvety tannins - James Halliday

Penfolds Rewards of Patience tasting panel 2021 - 5/5 rating

Penfolds Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. It is named after its original binning compartment at Magill cellars.

"No one in their right mind can call this wine disappointing. Indeed I reckon it's the best since the 1996. It's a wine of immense structured power. Sure there are rich flavours of plums, blackcurrant, smoky vanillin and tobacco, but really it's a wine about tannin and balance and grunt. I know that it will cellar like a dream. A classic in the making."   Campbell Mattinson

The 2005 Bin 389 is a blend of 52% cabernet sauvignon and 48% shiraz from premium vineyards in McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Barossa Valley. The wine was matured for 13 months in 26% new American oak hogsheads, with the balance in older American oak.

"Medium-deep crimson. Developed mulberry, cassis and crème brûlée with aniseed, herb and cola notes. A finely muscled wine with fresh yet developed mulberry, cassis and grilled nut flavours, herb and leaf notes, fine grainy al dente tannins and underlying savoury oak complexity. Chalky firm with a slinky persistent finish. Drinking well, but will improve with time. Peak drinking to 2035.

Wine region map of South Australia

South Australia

South Australian is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. It is home to more than 900 wineries across 18 wine regions. The regions are Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Eden Valley, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Fleurieu, Southern Flinders Ranges and Wrattonbully.

Many of the well-known names in the South Australian wine industry established their first vineyards in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The first vines in McLaren Vale were planted at Reynella in 1839 and Penfold's established Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1844.

South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the State to be able to produce a range of grape varieties - from cool climate Riesling in the Clare and Eden Vallies to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Two of Australia's best-known wines, Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, are produced here. There is much to discover in South Australia for the wine lover.
