A superb wine that shows enormous potential - Huon Hooke

Description

Internationally acclaimed winemaker Samantha Connew purchased her Palisander vineyard in the Coal River Valley in 2016. She promptly expanded the vineyard which included plantings of Chardonnay. The 2023 Stargazer Chardonnay is sourced from two vineyards, the Palisander vineyard (60%) and a vineyard at Ouse in the Derwent Valley (40%).

"Beautiful stone and citrus fruit tones mesh with a pitch-perfect level of struck match complexity along with hints of apple sorbet, soft spice, crushed riverstone, wildflowers and ozone. Tautly framed but expressive and long of flavour with soft, hazelnutty oak tones and briny drive that is nicely in line with the other characters. Such delicious, pristine drinking; winemaker Sam Connew is on a roll here."  Dave Brookes

Fruit for the 2023 Chardonnay was sourced from two vineyards, their own Palisander vineyard in Coal River Valley (60%) and from a vineyard at Ouse in the Derwent Valley (40%). The Stargazer plot, planted in 2017, has a south facing orientation and is primarily brown dermosol on Jurassic dolerite. The Derwent Valley vineyard owned by Bernand Brain was planted in 1999, is north-east facing and the soils are white silica sand over sandstone and clay. The grapes were hand-picked, wild fermented in 500L French oak barrels (20% of which were new) and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine matured on lees in these barrels for 8 months prior to blending, then spent 10 weeks in tank before bottling.

"Pale straw in colour, the nose shows plenty of white nectarine and fresh pear with some background secondary notes of gunflint and almond meal. The palate is complex and round with some nervy mouth-watering acidity and the almost quinine-like structure is balanced out by a juicy finish.Stargazer

Wine region map of Tasmania

Tasmania

Tasmania is a small island located below mainland Australia. It produces less than 1% of Australia’s wine but enjoys a global reputation as a leading producer of premium cool climate wines. It is prized for its top-class sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling.

Tasmania is home to more than 230 wineries across 7 wine regions*. The reigions Coal River Valley, East Coast, Pipers River and Tamar Valley produce around 90% of Tasmania's wine, while the other three regions Derwent Valley, Huon Valley and North West produce the remaining 10%. * Please note these 7 wine areas are considered here to be subregions of Tasmania to aid site navigation.

Tasmania is the coldest wine State in Australia. Its climate is temperate, with a distinct maritime influence from the Tasman Sea to the east, Bass Strait to the north and the Indian Ocean to the west. Summer days are temperate while winter sees some of the coldest temperatures in Australia. It's unique climate and soils combine to create ideal growing conditions for cool-climate grape varieties.
