The Other Wine Co. is a new venture of Michael Hill Smith and Martin Shaw that was launched in 2015. While it is part of the Shaw & Smith stable - the wines are made by the Shaw & Smith team at their winery in the Adelaide Hills - the focus is on producing affordable wines of purity, flavour and balance. Wines made to drink and enjoy, not think about.

From another cold vintage, this is the tenth release of The Other Wine Co. Pinot Gris. Fruit from the Adelaide Hills was fermented on solids in foudre, old oak and stainless steel, before spending four months on lees, which gives the wine a seductive texture on the palate. Add the pear, apple, jasmine and spice flavours, and a lovely wash of acidity, and you have a gorgeous wine to drink now or at any stage over the next three to four years.  

"Pear skin, custard apple, pretty spring florals, nashi pear, a dusting of spice and a shake from the salt shaker round out a perfumed nose. It’s the texture on the palate that really lifts this up a notch, with oak and fruit solids providing a complex weave to cushion the fruit. There is a delightful fruit sweetness that hums along here, but this is all about the textural weight. There’s plenty going on, with a tiptoe of acidity that keeps the party moving. Love the eyebrow lifting kick of fresh nutmeg and ginger spice on the finish. A cracker for summer salads."  Cassandra Charlick

"Fermented on full solids in a combination of large format oak foudres, seasoned French oak puncheons, and stainless steel. It was then allowed to rest on lees for 4 months. Star jasmine, mock orange blooms and pomelo pith. Mangosteen, orchard apples and nashi pear. Fresh linen, green gage plum and white pepper. This wine has stayed true to its style from day dot with slight tinkering to sweetness levels and hue. It's unapologetically Gris and filled with spice and all things nice. A lovely wash of natural moderate acidity and slight oily palate. A deserving pairing for Chinese strange flavour chicken or a fat turkey and brie sandwich."  The Other Wine Co.

Wines made to drink and enjoy, not think about.

"When we started thinking about The Other Wine Co., it was about the sort of wines that we like to drink when we’re out ordering a glass. One of the things you want is the right variety in the right place, first of all to tick that box, and the next is all about drinkability, about having something that’s really delicious and  something that’s not going to be dominated by oak or alcohol or extraction."  Adam Wadewitz, Winemaker

The wines are "other" partly because they give the winemakers a chance to work with varieties and regions that don’t fit into Shaw & Smith's raison d'être. They are also an "other" perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak to freshness and balance, and favour power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That’s it!

South Australian is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. It is home to more than 900 wineries across 18 wine regions. The regions are Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Plains, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Currency Creek, Eden Valley, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Riverland, Robe, Southern Fleurieu, Southern Flinders Ranges and Wrattonbully.

Many of the well-known names in the South Australian wine industry established their first vineyards in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The first vines in McLaren Vale were planted at Reynella in 1839 and Penfold's established Magill Estate on the outskirts of Adelaide in 1844.

South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the State to be able to produce a range of grape varieties - from cool climate Riesling in the Clare and Eden Vallies to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Two of Australia's best-known wines, Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, are produced here. There is much to discover in South Australia for the wine lover.
