Stylish and seductive, gorgeously harmonious – Sam Kim

Description

Two Paddocks was established In 1993 when well-known actor Sam Neill planted two hectares of Pinot Noir at Gibbston in Central Otago. Since then Neill has acquired three more vineyards and Two Paddocks is in the unique position of being the only Central Otago winery with a footprint in all three of Central Otago's great valleys - Gibbston, the Alexandra Basin and the Cromwell Basin.

The 2022 Two Paddocks Estate Pinot Noir was produced from the four Neill family Central Otago vineyards. It is a blend of fruit from Bannockburn (47%), Alexandra (31%) and Gibbston (22%), includes 46% whole bunch and was matured for 11 months in French oak barriques (18% new).

"A beguiling nose draws you in, earthy/humus notes, raspberry, spices, berry coulis, wisp of herb, intrigue. Wonderful definition, raspberry, cherry, berryfruit, savoury touches, depth to the fruit expression yet pinosity too. Delightful grainy character flows to super lip-smacking sapidity, flavours hanging in the mouth. Vibrant, refreshing and speaks of potential."  Mark Henderson

"Red cherry, plum, blackberry bramble and spice aromatics give way to a rich, warmly textured wine exuding lush fruit, softness, elegance and poise. The wine was produced from the four Neill family Central Otago vineyards. These small sites are high-density planted in a range of clonal material cropped to under 5 Tonne per hectare with most vineyard practices carried out by hand. The wine is hand crafted using traditional methods including indigenous fermentation and hand plunging. Maturation is in French barriques for 11 months, using a mix of older and new (18%) barrels."  Two Paddocks

Wine region map of New Zealand

New Zealand

New Zealand is home to more than 700 wineries across 14 wine regions. The regions are Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury, Central Otago, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Marlborough, Martinborough*, Nelson, Northland, Waikato, Waipara Valley, Wairarapa and Waitaki Valley. * Martinborough is a sub-region of Wairarapa, however, as it is world renowned it is considered here to be a region to avoid confusion.

The wine regions in New Zealand stretch from latitudes 36°S (Northland) in the north (comparable in latitude to Jerez, Spain), to 45°S (Central Otago) in the south (comparable in latitude to Bordeaux, France). New Zealand's climate is maritime, producing cooler summers and milder winters than would be expected at similar latitudes in Europe.

Viticulture in New Zealand dates back to 1836 when British resident James Busby produced wine in the far north, but it wasn't until 1985 that the wine industry came of age when Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc garnered international attention and critical acclaim.

New Zealand is internationally renowned for Sauvignon Blanc (particularly from Marlborough), Pinot Noir (Central Otago, Martinborough and Waipara Valley), Chardonnay, Bordeaux-style blends of mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (Hawkes Bay) and Syrah (Hawkes Bay). Sauvignon Blanc accounts for 63% of the area of the national vineyard, followed by Pinot Noir (14%), Chardonnay (8%), Pinot Gris (7%) and Merlot (3%).
